Wine Cellar Fabrication in Saddle River, NJ

wine room in saddle river nj “Would you like to see my wine collection in the basement under the stairs?” Ordinarily, most guests would take a pass. Not in this house – the wine cellar is both a clever use of space and a stunning conversation piece.

As you walk down to the lowest level of this new construction home in Saddle River, you are greeted by quite a visual surprise – a complete wine cellar hiding in plain sight behind a sleek floor-to-ceiling custom glass enclosure. No dark and mysterious wine cellar here – the homeowners proudly present their collection in an elegant and airy space, catching natural light from the large window nearby.

This wine cellar is an unexpected, but natural, extension of the glass railings we installed throughout the three-story home. We worked closely with the builder and stair manufacturer to ensure every detail of our client’s design concepts became a reality. The builder had a vision of installing a wine cellar in the basement. It would be located under the stairs that led from the first floor to the first landing leading to the basement. While the result looks deceptively simple, our experience working with all kinds of glass projects and high quality materials came into play with the building of this beautifully appointed glass wine closet which is truly an eye-catching display.

The Right Materials Make this All Glass Wine Cellar Work

To ensure strength and stability for years to come, at the bottom of the wine cellar we used a base shoe from C.R. Laurence to secure the 9/16” tempered laminated glass. A base shoe for laminated glass is a type of aluminum profile that is designed to hold the laminated glass panels in place, which is cut to the required length and drilled for varying glass thicknesses.

We worked with the stair fabricator to select a stringer over stringer stair configuration so that we could conceal the base-shoe inside the stringer to make the glass appear to float in place with no visible support.  A stringer is the structural part of a set of stairs that supports the treads and risers. In this project, a stringer over stringer stair configuration means that the stringers run straight over the landings and into the skirting boards. We used the same base shoe and glass throughout the project.

The wine cellar glass runs full height from the string to the ceiling. We used hydraulic self-closing pivots so that the door opens and closes smoothly with a whisper. To open the door easily, we also installed a dramatic black ladder pull handle. The patch lock was also chosen in a matte black finish and served to close the area off from the rest of the basement.

All in all, we think this is a very clever use of space to show off a wine collection that also serves as an unexpected artistic but functional element in your home. It’s as beautiful as it is strong, thanks to the expert installation of tempered glass from the experienced team at Suburban Glass and Mirror. We love tackling complex creative projects and work hand-in-hand with home builders, interior designers, and homeowners to create design projects you can proudly display for years to come.
